What Happens in the PICU? A Parent’s Guide

When your child is admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the world shrinks to a single room full of monitors and machines. It’s natural to feel scared. But understanding what’s happening around your child can replace fear with focus.
Why children are admitted to the PICU:
The PICU cares for children with severe illnesses or injuries that need intensive monitoring: respiratory failure requiring ventilator support, sepsis (a life-threatening response to infection), serious trauma or post-surgical recovery, status epilepticus (prolonged seizures), diabetic emergencies, and severe dehydration with organ stress.
Understanding the equipment:
The cardiac monitor tracks heart rate and rhythm continuously. The pulse oximeter (a small clip on the finger or toe) measures oxygen levels. IV lines deliver medications and fluids. A ventilator may assist breathing if your child’s lungs need support. Every number on every screen has a purpose — and the team watches them constantly.
The PICU team:
Your child’s care is managed by a paediatric intensivist (a specialist in critically ill children), supported by trained PICU nurses, respiratory therapists, and, when needed, nephrologists, surgeons, and other specialists. At Feathers Hospital, an intensivist is present around the clock.
Your role during the PICU stay:
Talk to your child — your voice is familiar and comforting, even if they’re sedated. Ask the team questions at any time. Keep a small notebook to track updates and questions. Take care of yourself too: eat, rest when you can, and lean on family for support.
Preparing for discharge:
Before your child leaves the PICU, the team will ensure stable vital signs for at least 24 hours, successful weaning from any respiratory support, adequate oral feeding, and a clear follow-up plan. You’ll be given detailed instructions for home care and recovery.
The PICU is not a place any parent wants to be. But it’s a place where expert hands, advanced technology, and compassionate care come together to give your child the highest chance at recovery.
