Child Development Milestones: 0–5 Years Explained
Dr. Sumit Patel5 min read
Watching your child grow is one of parenting’s greatest joys. Developmental milestones are the skills most children reach by a certain age — in movement, communication, thinking, and emotions. They are guidelines, not strict deadlines.
Why milestones matter:
Paediatricians use milestones to spot delays early, when support makes the biggest difference. A child who is slightly behind in one area may catch up naturally; persistent gaps across several areas deserve a closer look.
0–12 months:
In the first year, look for steady head control, rolling, sitting, babbling, responding to their name, and social smiles. Premature babies may reach milestones based on corrected age — your neonatologist can explain this.
1–3 years:
Toddlers typically walk independently, use simple words and short phrases, explore objects, and show strong attachment to caregivers. Play becomes more imaginative. Tantrums are normal as emotions outpace language.
3–5 years:
Preschoolers often run, hop, speak in sentences, draw simple shapes, play cooperatively, and follow basic rules. School readiness includes listening, sharing, and managing bathroom needs.
When to talk to your doctor:
If your child loses skills they once had, does not respond to sound or voices by 12 months, has no words by 18 months, or you feel consistently worried — share your observations at the next visit. Early referral to developmental support can be life-changing.
Well-baby check-ups at Feathers include developmental screening alongside the physical exam. You can also use our milestone guide (under the Parent Guide section) to prepare specific questions for your paediatrician.
