CRRT for Children: A Parent’s Guide to Kidney Support

If your child is in the PICU and the team mentions CRRT, you may feel overwhelmed by another acronym. CRRT — Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy — is a specialised form of dialysis designed for very sick children whose kidneys need round-the-clock assistance.
How CRRT differs from standard dialysis:
Traditional dialysis runs in timed sessions. CRRT works slowly and continuously over 24 hours, which is gentler on a child’s blood pressure and circulation. This makes it especially suitable for children with sepsis, shock, or multi-organ problems.
When is it needed?
CRRT may be used when acute kidney injury develops during critical illness, when fluid overload threatens breathing, or when the body cannot tolerate intermittent dialysis. It is a bridge — supporting the kidneys while the primary illness is treated.
What parents see at the bedside:
Your child will have careful monitoring lines and a CRRT machine managed by trained ICU and nephrology staff. The team will explain each step, answer your questions, and involve you in comfort care — your voice and touch still matter deeply.
Recovery outlook:
Many children recover kidney function once the underlying crisis improves. Others may need longer-term nephrology follow-up. Early, expert renal support improves outcomes.
