Signs Your Child May Need a Kidney Check-Up

Unlike in adults, kidney problems in children rarely announce themselves with dramatic symptoms. They often hide behind everyday complaints — tiredness, poor appetite, or frequent trips to the bathroom. Knowing what to look for can make the difference between early treatment and a complicated condition.
Warning signs to watch for:
Swelling around the eyes, especially in the morning, is one of the earliest signs of a kidney problem in children. Other indicators include swollen ankles or feet, a sudden increase in weight, foamy or dark-coloured urine, reduced urine output, persistent tiredness, and recurrent urinary tract infections.
Bed-wetting beyond age 5:
While occasional bed-wetting is common in young children, persistent bed-wetting (enuresis) beyond age 5–6 can sometimes indicate an underlying kidney or bladder issue. It’s worth discussing with a paediatric nephrologist if it continues.
High blood pressure in children:
Most parents don’t expect high blood pressure in children, but it can occur — and kidney disease is a leading cause. If your paediatrician finds elevated blood pressure during a routine check-up, a kidney evaluation should be the next step.
Recurrent UTIs:
A single UTI in a child is common and treatable. But recurrent infections, especially in children under 5, may signal a structural abnormality in the urinary tract that needs investigation through imaging and specialist evaluation.

If your child shows any of these signs — or if there’s a family history of kidney disease — a specialist consultation can provide clarity. Early detection means simpler treatments, fewer complications, and better long-term outcomes.
