Signs of Kidney Problems in Children

Children’s kidneys work hard and usually quietly. When something goes wrong, symptoms may be subtle — easy to blame on a busy week or a mild infection. Recognising warning signs helps your child get the right care sooner.
Changes in urine:
Watch for blood in the urine, persistent foaminess, very dark or very pale urine, pain while urinating, or a noticeable decrease in how often your child urinates. Frequent UTIs, especially under age 5, should be investigated.
Swelling and fluid:
Puffiness around the eyes in the morning, swelling of feet or ankles, or sudden weight gain may suggest the kidneys are not clearing fluid properly.
Energy and growth:
Chronic kidney problems can cause poor appetite, unusual tiredness, slowed growth, or pale skin. These symptoms have many causes — but kidney function tests are an important part of the workup.
Blood pressure in children:
High blood pressure is not only an adult issue. Elevated readings on routine checks may be linked to kidney disease and deserve nephrology input.
Family history:
If close relatives have kidney disease, genetic conditions, or required dialysis, mention this to your paediatrician even if your child seems well.
