Dialysis in Children: What Parents Need to Know

Learning that your child may need dialysis is frightening. It helps to understand that paediatric dialysis is not simply a smaller version of adult treatment — it requires child-specific equipment, dosing, and a team that understands growing bodies.
What dialysis does:
Dialysis filters waste and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys cannot do this adequately. It does not cure kidney disease, but it can stabilise your child while the underlying condition is treated or while awaiting recovery.
Types used in children:
Haemodialysis uses a machine and access point (often a catheter initially) to clean blood over several hours, typically several times per week. Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of the abdomen as a natural filter, often at home after training. Your nephrologist will recommend the best option for your child’s age, lifestyle, and medical needs.

Supporting your child emotionally:
Use honest, age-appropriate language. Maintain routines where possible. Bring comfort items to sessions. Ask our team about play specialists and parent counselling — you do not have to navigate this alone.
